B: December 6, 1953

1972 & 1976 Olympic Bronze Medalist

Stones competed in three Olympic Games and set three outdoor world records. At the age of 18, he qualified for the U.S. team in 1972 and captured a bronze medal at the Games. In 1976, he entered the Olympics as the favorite, but his power flop technique suffered in the rain, and he had to settle for antoher bronze medal. Stones set his third world record just weeks after the Olympics. In 1984, he set an American record of 2.34 at the Olympic Trials, but finished just fourth at the Olympics in Los Angeles. Stones has been a color commentator for every Summer Olympics since 1984, specializing in covering the field events.
