1978 SUPERTEAMS FOOTBALL PRELIMINARY

The Cowboys opened up an early 3-0 lead on some mistakes by the Broncos. Steve Foley was leading Charlie Waters on the third leg of the running relay, but dropped the baton and lost all hope of catching Waters. The Broncos built up a lead over the first four runs, until Otis Armstrong absoultely butchered the course as Drew Pearson cruised through to take the lead. Denver won the swimming thanks to a thrilling 25.3 split on the 50 yard leg by Randy Gradishar and after winning volleyball closed the lead to 3-2 and won the outrigger war canoe race by default as Cowboy steersman Ralph Neely fell out of the boat and the Cowboys ended up wasing up on shore. The Cowboys rebounded to take an early lead in the tug-of-war and never relented, winning after the ten minute time period to qualify for the Superteams final.
