1980 MEN'S PRELIMINARY 1

Pittsburgh Pirate secondbaseman Phil Garner surprised many by winning the first preliminary round of the 1980 Superstars. Mike Schmidt finished third, the only time he lost a preliminary round in four appearances. Ron Guidry competed despite the clause in his contract with the New York Yankees that specifically banned particpation in Superstars. He was later fined $2,000. The preliminary was very competitive, even with only eleven entrants, Garner's winning total of 32 is the lowest ever in a 10-event Superstars competition.
