1964 Olympic Champion

Davies began with long jump in 1961 and finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games in 1962. The Welshman surprised many by winning the Olympic long jump gold medal in Tokyo, becoming the first non-American since 1920 to win the event. He also ran the 100 meters in Tokyo and was a member of the British 4x100 meter relay team that finished 8th. Davies captured the European and Commonwealth championships in 1966 and the European Indoor Championship in 1967. Davies finished 9th at the 1968 Olympics and took the silver medal at the 1969 European Championships and retained his Commonwealth Games title in 1970. Davies made a third Olympic appearance in 1972, finishing 18th in qualifying.
